Chuckle is part of my 29 birds in 29 days challenge, inspired by the top 10 Australian birds of 2023. The Laughing Kookaburra came in at number four, and how could I resist making one of them look like he’s really having a good laugh?

With thick oils and palette knife strokes, I created rich textures in the feathers and background, giving this happy little kookaburra depth, personality, and charm. The background colour perfectly complements the bird, making the painting sing with joy.

Named Chuckle to celebrate its playful energy (and paired with its partner piece Giggle), this kookaburra is a daily reminder to smile.
