Francis is part of my Feathery February collection, created to celebrate Australia’s favourite birds. This piece honours the Gouldian Finch, one of the most colourful and captivating little birds. About 75% have black faces, 25% red, and on rare occasions, yellow, each as stunning as the next.

Painted in thick oils with palette knives, Francis features textured feathers, a soft pale yellow backdrop, and a joyful sense of companionship (as part of a finch pair with its partner piece Faith). Compact and versatile, it’s perfect for standing on a shelf or hanging on a wall. This piece is not only a celebration of Australia’s birdlife but also a personal tribute to my childhood, when my dad bred finches in our backyard aviary.
