I used thick oil paint and palette knives to create rich textures in the Faith’s feathers and the background. This technique brings the painting to life, adding depth and dimension that invites you to explore every detail. I painted a pair of finches to give a sense of companionship and to reflect the natural behaviour of these delightful birds. The partner piece to Faith is Francis, also available on my website.
The Inspiration
The Gouldian Finch is renowned for its striking colours. Approximately 75% of these finches have black faces, with 25% having red faces, and on rare occasions, you might even find a yellow-faced one. These vibrant birds hold a special place in my heart because my dad used to breed finches when I was a child. Our backyard aviary was filled with a variety of finches, creating many cherished memories for me.
